On October 9, 2016, Putz applied with three other applicants to succeed Hans Rampf . He had declined the advice to practice his Austrian dialect; nor did he have as large a network within the city as his competitors. In the runoff election, Putz won with 63.0% of the vote; Radlmeier came to 37.0%. The turnout was 45.11%. The term of office began on January 1, 2017.

At Putz's suggestion, the mayor and city council elections were merged again on March 15, 2020 , although he could have stayed in office for six years.
