Alexander Walentinowitsch Sakharov ( Russian Александр Валентинович Захаров ; born June 1, 1941 in Moscow ) is a Russian physicist .

Life

Sakharov studied at the Moscow State Aviation Institute and at the Lomonosov Moscow University . Since then he has been working at the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI-RAN). He examined the currents of high-energy electrons and the low-frequency noise in mid-latitudes and used the results for his candidate dissertation . He described the experimental investigation and determination of ions in an energy-rich magnetospheric plasma in his doctoral dissertation .

Together with others, Sakharov developed the programs for the Russian Mars mission Mars 96 and the Martian moon mission Fobos-Grunt . In 2008 he became a member of the Planetary Society team for a capsule with selected microorganisms on board the Russian Fobos-Grunt space probe (Living Interplanetary Flight Experiment).

When the Russian Fobos-Grunt space probe returned from the Martian moon Phobos unsuccessfully in 2012 and burned up in the earth's atmosphere , the director of the IKI-RAN Lev Matveyevich Seljony applied for a second Phobos mission Fobos-Grunt 2 with the previous head of mission Sakharov. However, the Russian space agency Roskosmos decided in March 2012 to participate in the ExoMars program of the European Space Agency (ESA) and to concentrate its financial resources on it. The realization of Fobos-Grunt 2 will be postponed into the future as the funds are currently focused on ExoMars and the Russian lunar program Luna-Glob .

Sakharov is scientific secretary in the state budget office in the IKI-RAN and in the council for the physics of the solar system . He is a member of the Asteroid and Comet Threat Section of the Expert Working Group on Cosmic Threats. He is a member of the International Academy of Astronautics .
