Prince Alexius Friedrich zu Bentheim and Steinfurt (born January 20, 1781 ; † November 3, 1866 ) was a German registrar in the Kingdom of Hanover (formerly the County of Bentheim ) and in the Kingdom of Prussia (formerly the County of Steinfurt ). He came from the younger line of the Bentheim-Steinfurt family . His father was Prince Ludwig Wilhelm Geldricus Ernst zu Bentheim and Steinfurt . The mother was Wilhelmine (born von Holstein-Glücksburg ). On October 17, 1811, he married Wilhelmine Caroline Friderike Maria, Princess of Solms-Braunfels . The marriage had six children. These were the main heirs Ludwig (* 1812), Wilhelm (* 1814), Julius (* 1815), Carl Everwyn (* 1816), Auguste (* 1817) and Ferdinand (* 1819).

Life

He studied in Marburg with Johann Stephan Pütter, among others . After his father's death, he took over as the nobleman who in conjunction with the Congress of Vienna, newly built (1815) Standesherrschaft whose territory before 1806 ( Confederation of the Rhine ) under the sovereignty of the house of Bentheim-Steinfurt was. The two counties covered an area of ​​19.9 square miles with around 26,000 residents. The prince's annual income was estimated at 160,000 guilders.

Shortly after taking over the class rule, he was sued by the Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda line in 1821. It was about the ownership of the counties Bentheim and Steinfurt. The process for the property located in Prussia continued until 1829 and for the property located in the Kingdom of Hanover for even longer. Ultimately, Prince Alexius' ownership was confirmed. Incidentally, the Grafschaft Bentheim, which had long been a lien in Hanover, had returned to the Bentheim-Steinfurt house in 1823. He was a member of the Westphalian Provincial Parliament and in 1847/48 a member of the First and Second United State Parliaments . In 1854 he was represented in the provincial parliament by his son Julius and in 1845 and 1851 by his son Ludwig. Since 1854 he was officially a member of the Prussian mansion without actually becoming active there.
