Alfonso Cardinal Capecelatro di Castelpagano CO (born February 5, 1824 in Marseille , France, † November 14, 1912 in Capua , Italy) was Archbishop of Capua and librarian of the Vatican Apostolic Library .

Life

Coming from a noble Neapolitan family, Capecelatro entered the order of the Oratorians in 1840 and was ordained a priest in May 1847 after completing his studies . He completed his historical studies at the Biblioteca dei Girolamini and in Montecassino , which he frequently visited. In 1879 he became the Vice Librarian of the Holy See . Pope Leo XIII. awarded him the title of papal house prelate in 1879.

In 1880 Capecelatro became Archbishop of Capua. The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Raffaele Monaco La Valletta ; Co- consecrators were Luigi Filippi, OFM Ref , Archbishop of L'Aquila , and Curia Bishop Placido Maria Schiaffino OSB . In 1881 he opened the archiepiscopal library and the library of the seminary to the public. Leo XIII. took him on July 27, 1885 as cardinal priest of Santi Nereo e Achilleo in the college of cardinals . In 1890 he became a cardinal librarian . He participated in the 1903 conclave that Pius X elected. He died in 1912 at the age of 88 and was buried in Montecassino at his own request .

From 1891 he was a corresponding member of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence .
