Alfred Cauchie

Alfred Henri Joseph Cauchie (born October 26, 1860 in Haulchin , Hainaut , † February 10, 1922 in Rome ) was a Belgian canon , historian and university professor .

Life

After completing his secondary education from 1874 to 1880 at the Petit Séminaire de Bonne-Espérance in Vellereille-les-Brayeux , he studied philosophy at the seminary between 1880 and 1882 . He was ordained a priest in 1885 before the Bishop of Tournai Isidoro-Giuseppe-Victor du Rousseaux sent him to study history at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1886 . He completed this course in 1888 with a degree in moral sciences and history.

Cauchie was from 1888-1889 collegiate at Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome and employee in the secret archives of the Vatican . In 1891 he earned a doctorate in moral sciences and history from the Catholic University of Leuven. Subsequently, he was a lecturer in heuristics , historical criticism and church history . In 1896 he was instrumental in bringing together the history, theology and canon law courses into a history seminar.

In 1900 he founded the Revue d'histoire ecclésiastique , a specialist journal for the history of Christianity that still appears today, together with Paulin Ladeuze , who would later be rector of the Catholic University of Leuven for decades .

He also campaigned for a Belgian Historical Institute in Rome, the 1902 Dom Ursmer Berlière, a monk of the Benedictine - Maredsous Abbey was founded and its director himself until his death was from the 1918th Cauchie died as a result of a traffic accident and was buried in the priestly crypt of Campo Santo Teutonico.

Publications

Cauchie's best-known publications include the history of the investiture dispute in the Diocese of Liège and Archdiocese of Cambrai between 1075 and 1107, which appeared in two volumes, as well as his report on his activities in the Vatican Secret Archives.
