Alfred Coppel

Alfred Coppel , full name Alfredo José de Araña-Marini y Coppel , pseudonyms Robert Cham Gilman , AC Marin , Alfred Coppel, Jr. , GH Rains , Derfla Leppoc , Sol Galaxan (born November 9, 1921 in Oakland / California; † 30. May 2004 ), was an American author who wrote, among other things, in the genre of science fiction .

Life

Coppel served in the American Air Force as a fighter pilot during World War II . He graduated from Stanford University and became a copywriter . With the pseudonyms Robert Cham Gilman and AC Marin , he ranked among the most prolific pulp magazine authors of the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1974 he landed a bestseller with the thriller Thirty-Four East (German: 34 degrees East ) about the Middle East conflict . Under the pseudonym Robert Cham Gilman, he wrote The Rebel of Rhada from the Rhada cycle, a novel about a galactic empire that has been revised and included in Brian Aldiss ' Galactic Empires collection .

The novel Dark December (1960, Ger. After zero hour , 1966) depicts the aftermath of an invented nuclear war between the United States of America and Russia. In The Apocalypse Brigade (1981), Coppel writes about the United States in the war on international terrorism . In The Burning Mountain: A Novel of the Invasion of Japan (1983) imagined what would have happened if the Trinity test would have failed on 16 July 1945 so that the United States would have been forced to invade Japan 1946th The work is based on the American plans to invade Japan in Operation Downfall , which were no longer carried out because of the Japanese surrender after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki .
