Alfred Kleine

Alfred Kleine (born November 13, 1930 in Leipzig ) was Lieutenant General of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) and head of the Main Department (HA) XVIII (Economics) of the MfS.

Life

Born in Leipzig as the son of a driver, Kleine graduated from secondary school in 1947 . He then learned the profession of administrative clerk and worked as such until 1950. In 1950, Kleine joined the SED and became economic director of the Leipzig-Dosen hospital. In 1952 he took over the management of a company before he was hired by the MfS in 1953. There he worked for HA III (Economics) and was deputy head of department from 1955, later department head. In 1956 he was appointed deputy head of HA III. From 1964 this was called HA XVIII. In 1956 he began distance learning at the Berlin School of Economics, which he graduated in 1962 as a graduate economist. In 1967/68 he was temporarily released from work and received his doctorate from the University of the Ministry for State Security (JHS) as Dr. jur. with a collective dissertation on " The system of secrecy protection in selected areas of structure-determining branches of the GDR ". In 1974 he became the sole head of HA XVIII and took over from Rudi Mittig . As such, he organized the evasion of western embargo regulations and the blackmailing of foreign exporters in favor of the MfS. In 1985 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold. and was promoted to lieutenant general in 1989. In October 1989, based on the knowledge of the MfS, he compiled a list that put the investment requirement in the ailing GDR economy at 500 billion marks. As early as 1980 he had relentlessly analyzed the state of the GDR economy and received a reprimand from Minister Erich Mielke . At the same time he gave instructions to keep the extent of the environmental pollution in the GDR secret. In the course of the political change and peaceful revolution in the GDR , Kleine was released from his position in December 1989 and dismissed in 1990. He had previously given instructions to provide reliable employees of the MfS with false documents and to accommodate them inconspicuously in the private sector in order to conceal their Stasi activities. Since 1992 he has been co-operator of a service company. In 2003 he made a contribution to “Securing the National Economy” in Die Sicherheit. On the defense work of the MfS , a justification of former MfS officers. Today Kleine lives in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen .
