Alfred Jentoft Maurstad (born July 26, 1896 in a farm in Maurstad near Vågsøy , formerly Davik in Fylke Sogn og Fjordane , † September 5, 1967 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian actor , musician , theater director and director .

Life

After graduating from school, Maurstad attended a non-commissioned officer school in Bergen from 1916 and then initially worked as a salesman and accountant. Even in his youth, Maurstad worked as an extra at Den Nationale Scene in Bergen and played Hardanger fiddle or violin at various events and concerts in Nordfjord , some of which were recorded on Norwegian folk songs and melodies.

Maurstad was one of the first Hardanger fiddle players to appear on the radio for the first time in the 1920s. He also performed together with Sigbjørn Bernhoft Osa and Eivind Groven as the Hardangerfiedel Trio ( Hardingfeletrioen ). The trio played melodies and folk songs with three Hardanger fiddle instruments at events by Eivind Groven and appeared regularly on the folk music radio program in the 1930s. During this time Maurstad became widely known as a musician through his appearances with the well-known piece Fanitullen by Johan Halvorsen and together with the Norwegian violinist, composer and conductor Olav Moe in the piece I Aurdal i Valdres . Maurstad also took part in Johan Halvorsen's orchestral suite Fossegrimen , which was written as a play by the playwright Sigurd Eldegard and played by him both as a solo number and in the orchestra.

Maurstad debuted in 1920 as an actor at Det Norske Teatret and was then from 1931 at Nationaltheatret operates. From 1945 to 1950 he was theater director at Trøndelag Teater . As a stage actor, he received his greatest attention while playing the lead role in Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt and through his appearance in Hans E. Kinck's Driftekaren .

He had his most famous film role in Norway with his appearance as the felon Gjest Bårdsen in the film of the same name Gjest Baardsen as well as in Fant and Tørres Snørtevold , where he also played a leading role.

Alfred Maurstad spent most of his holidays in his home in Maurstad. It was later taken over by his son Toralv Maurstad (* 1926).

In his first marriage he was married to the actress Tordis Maurstad and after the divorce he married Gro Maurstad . Alfred Maurstad is the father of actress Mari Maurstad and actor Toralv Maurstad.

Alfred Maurstad was appointed commander of the Order of St. Olav in 1957 . In 1977 the Maurstad memorial , created by Arnold Haukeland , was erected in his hometown of Maurstad in Maurstad-Park ( Maurstad-parken ) on Nordfjordeid .
