Alfred Mitterhofer

Alfred Mitterhofer (born March 5, 1940 in Linz ; † November 6, 1999 in Vienna ) was an Austrian organist , harpsichord player and composer .

Life

Alfred Mitterhofer studied organ , harpsichord and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna ; his teachers included u. a. Anton Heiller . He also carried out theological studies in Vienna, Neuchâtel and Jerusalem .

His concert activities as an organist and harpsichordist have taken him to most of Europe , the USA , Canada , the Middle East and Israel . In this context he took part in international festivals and organ weeks. As a harpsichordist he appeared as a soloist in performances under the direction of Claudio Abbado and Nikolaus Harnoncourt , and as an organist he was the duo partner of trumpeter Maurice André .

He also recorded records and performed the entire organ work and a large part of the harpsichord works by Johann Sebastian Bach as part of concert cycles in Vienna. In 1974 he was appointed professor of organ at the Vienna Music University and trained numerous organists until his death, including Norbert Zeilberger . He also appeared as a lecturer in interpretation courses in Italy , Finland , Germany and Austria.
