Alfred Jean Nicolas "Didi" de Rauch (born June 1, 1887 in Warsaw , † November 25, 1985 in Paris ) was a French ice hockey player .

Life

Alfred de Rauch came from a prominent and wealthy French family with roots in Bavaria. His father, born in St. Petersburg, Alfred Édouard Henri de Rauch, former Colonel of the Russian Guard, Knight of the Legion of Honor, was a military attaché in the French embassy in Russia. Alfred de Rauch was born in Warsaw (then in Russia) and grew up in Saint Petersburg .

In 1916 he married Madeleine de Rauch , who was a tennis player and later became a famous Parisian fashion designer, achieved great fame in France and has been compared to Coco Chanel and Jeanne Lanvin . She opened a boutique with her sisters that achieved international fame. Alfred's sister-in-law Yvonne Bourgeois took part in the 1924 Olympic Games as a tennis player.

Career

Alfred de Rauch played ice hockey from 1908. Club des Patineurs de Paris , which was renamed Club des Sports d'Hiver de Paris in 1921 and of which he was the captain for almost twenty years. With the Paris team, he won the French championship title in the 1911/12 and 1921/22 seasons . In addition, he took part with CP Paris in a number of international tournaments such as the Coupe de Chamonix and the LIHG championship .

His sporting activities were interrupted by the First World War, during which he served in the French army.

Alfred de Rauch participated for the French national ice hockey team in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp and the Winter Olympics in Chamonix in 1924 and in St. Moritz in 1928 . At the European Championships in 1923 he won the silver medal with his team. At the European Championship in 1924 he even won the gold medal with France. He formed one of the best offensive ranks of the 1920s with Léonhard Quaglia and Albert Hassler .

Between 1927 and 1928 he was a member of the LIHG Council as a player .

In addition to his excellent puck and stick handling, his understanding of tactics and leadership skills were praised. Also mentioned was his shooting accuracy and his game intelligence, which was ahead of its time. He was also the captain of his club and national team for many years. One of his teammates in Paris, George Geran (the first NHL player to play in Europe) mentioned De Rauch as one of his three comrades who would be good enough to play on a team in the US.

In addition to ice hockey, de Rauch also ran speed skating , field hockey and rugby. In 1932, at the age of 45, he ended his playing career and was still a referee for the LIHG in the 1930s.
