Ali Günçar (born May 19, 1970 in Afyonkarahisar ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. He played six seasons for Beşiktaş Istanbul and is remembered for that time. Since during his time at Beşiktaş Istanbul there was another Ali in the team squad, Ali gilt , who was older, Günçar was from then on referred to as Küçük Ali (German: Little Ali ), as was usual in such a situation , and gilt as Büyük Ali ( German: The great Ali ).

Player career

Günçar started at the age of ten in the youth department of Afyonspor , the most famous club in his hometown Afyonkarahisar , with club football. At the age of 17 he was accepted into the professional squad and began to play for them in the 2nd Futbol Ligi . For the 1989 season he missed relegation with his team and was relegated to the 3rd Futbol Ligi . In the first third division season after relegation Günçar reached the championship with his team and thus the direct promotion to the second division.

At Afyonspor, he noticed those responsible for the first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara , who signed him for the 1990/91 season. With the capital city Günçar prevailed relatively quickly as a regular player and also made it to the Turkish U-21 international. In his second season for Gençlerbirliği, Günçar increased his performance, rose to the senior national team and became one of the most sought-after players of the 1992 summer transfer period.

For the 1992/93 season Günçar moved to the reigning Turkish champions Beşiktaş Istanbul . Here he was carefully accustomed to the regular formation in his first season by head coach Gordon Milne . So he completed 16 league games this season and ended the season with his team without a title. His team started the new season by winning the pre-season TSYD Istanbul Cup . In the second season Günçar was used by Milne from the start of the season as a regular player. After Beşiktaş ended the first half of the 1993/94 season with a 10-point gap to the leaders, Milne resigned from his post and was replaced by Christoph Daum . Günçar kept his regular place under Daum. With Daum, the team ended the season in 4th place in the table and won the Turkish Cup . In the new season, Daum went through a squad revision and parted ways with some long-time players. With newly signed players and some older players, he then formed a new team. Günçar was one of the most important players on this team. With this newly formed team, Beşiktaş was able to become Turkish champions again after three years. Under Daum Günçar completed 15 league games in the 1994/95 championship season. In the next season he fought his way back over long distances. The season ended without a title for his team. In the summer of 1996, the resigned Daum was replaced by Rasim Kara . Günçar was also set under this coach. His team started the season by winning the TSYD Istanbul Cup. During the season they fought for the championship with Galatasaray Istanbul for a long time , but at the end of the season they were left behind against their arch-rivals. In addition to the runner-up, the club was able to win the Prime Minister's Cup . For the new season, Beşiktaş will replace Kara with Welshman John Toshack . This coach switched the defense to a back four and sorted out the players who, in his opinion, were not suitable for this system, including Günçar. After he had only completed two league appearances by the winter break, he was loaned to league rivals Samsunspor for the second half of the season.

For the summer of 1998 Günçar Beşiktaş left and moved within the league to Adanaspor . With this club he dissolved his contract early in April 1999 and ended his career.

National team

In 1990, at the age of 20, Günçar was nominated by the then U-21 national coach Fatih Terim for the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team and played eight games in two years.

On the occasion of the Mediterranean Games in 1991, he was appointed to the squad of the Olympic selection of Turkey, which was also supervised by Terim. Günçar completed two matches in this tournament and won the silver medal with his team.

In March 1992 he was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team by Sepp Piontek as part of a qualifying match of the European Championship 1996 against the Icelandic national team and made his international debut in this match. By the summer of 1994 he completed six more assignments for Turkey and was then not nominated for three years. It was not until 1997 that the new coach Mustafa Denizli nominated him , but did not use him.
