Alinghi 5 in the port of Lausanne in July 2009

The Alinghi 5 is the catamaran with which the Alinghi team lost to the USA 17 in the 33rd America's Cup .

The catamaran was built by Alinghi-Villeneuve and Décision-Corsier in an assembly hall in Villeneuve VD . The naval architects were Rolf Vrolijk and the Alinghi design team. At times Nigel Irens , Benoît Cabaret and Alain Gautier were hired as consultants. The Australian Grant Simmer was the design coordinator.

The boat was launched for the first time on July 8, 2009 in Lake Geneva with a Mil-Mi-26 helicopter. The same helicopter was used to transport the catamaran over the Great St. Bernard Pass to Genoa on August 7, 2009 .

The boat is extremely light for its size and optimized for high speeds in light winds and waves up to 50 cm high. The windward hull comes out of the water at around 8  knots of wind . More than 20 knots can be achieved on the cross , and more than 30 knots on space courses . Although the America's Cup regattas should only be sailed up to wind force  4 or 15  kn (28  km / h ) wind speed, the apparent wind on deck can reach 40  kn (74  km / h ) and more, which is then Beaufort 8–9 corresponds (with unreefed sails).

Technical specifications

  • Boat type : Catamaran of carbon fiber
  • Rigging : sloop
  • Place of manufacture : Villeneuve, Switzerland, Alinghi-Décision
  • Construction : Rolf Vrolijk and Alinghi Design Team
  • Advisors : Nigel Irens, Benoît Cabaret, Alain Gautier
  • Construction time : over 100,000 hours
  • Measured length of the waterline : 27.45 m
  • Max. Length of the waterline in motion : 33.55 m (110 feet)
  • Width overall : estimated 23–27 m (75–90 feet)
  • Mast height : estimated 45-62 m (depending on source, image material and level of development)
  • Displacement : about 18-20 tons (old estimate; possibly only 12 tons)
  • Mast weight : roughly estimated 1000 kg
  • Mainsail : about 500–1000 m² (depending on the source and the expertise of the appraiser, realistic are 600 m² plus approx. 50 m² usable mast area as sail area)
  • Headsail (Jib) : about 350-400 m² (depending on the source and skill of the estimator)
  • Gennaker : around 1100 m² (one of the largest sails ever made)

Even the technical data with the source are estimates by mostly journalists, since Team Alinghi, like the rival BMW Oracle Racing 90 , keeps the exact values secret for reasons of competition and to avoid protests and legal disputes. Apart from the two lengths of the waterline (90 and 110 feet, 27.45 and 33.55 m), which were the subject of the official survey or a legal dispute that has already been decided, no technical information has been confirmed. How explosive the information situation is can be seen from the fact that rumors about the manufacturing process or location of parts of the Alinghi 5 sails have already led to protests and legal proceedings. If a team were to publish data - directly or in retrospect - these would have to be critically questioned anyway in view of the competition situation.
