Allan Duncan Brown (born October 12, 1926 in Kennoway , † April 19, 2011 in Blackpool , England ) was a Scottish football player and coach .

Career as a player

Brown played from 1944 first at East Fife FC , having previously played at an amateur club in his hometown. In 1948 he rose with the club in the first Scottish league and won the Scottish League Cup . In the first division he drew the attention of those responsible for the Scottish national team to himself, so that he made his debut in the national team in 1950. In the same year he won the Scottish League Cup again with his club. He then moved to Blackpool FC in England, where other Scots already played with Jackie Mudie , Ewan Fenton , Hugh Kelly and George Farm . 1951 managed to get into the final of the FA Cup , which was lost to Newcastle United . Two years later, the club won the Cup against Bolton Wanderers , but was unable to play after a broken leg earlier in the season. At the 1954 World Cup , he was one of the 13 Scottish players who traveled to Switzerland. Without a goal in both games they returned as bottom of the group in the preliminary round. In early 1957 he moved to Luton Town , where he reached the cup final again in 1959. They lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest . In 1960 he joined Portsmouth FC until he played as a player- coach for Wigan Athletic between 1964 and 1966 .

Career as a coach

After the end of his career in 1966, he left Wigan Athletic and coached his former game station Luton Town. In 1968 he led the fourth division into the third division. Things went well there too, but after it became known that he had looked for the vacant coaching position at Leicester City , he was fired in December of that year. In January 1969 he took over the third division club Torquay United , which he coached until a failed start to the season in October 1971. In June 1972 he took over Bury FC , which he led to twelfth place in the fourth division. In November 1973 he left the club to coach the second division Nottingham Forest . After the goal of promotion was in the distance, the club dismissed him in late December 1974 and replaced him with Brian Clough . This was followed by a brief engagement at FC Southport between January and May 1976 until he hired at his former club FC Blackpool, with whom he narrowly missed promotion to the first division at the end of his first season. However, after a dispute with the club management, he was fired in February 1978. After a short stay as a coach in Kuwait, he returned to Blackpool FC in March 1981, but could not prevent relegation to the fourth division. After the direct resurgence was missed, his engagement ended in the summer of 1982.
