All Saints Church in Rieth

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of All Saints in the Rieth district of the municipality of Heldburg in the Hildburghausen district ( Thuringia ) dates from 1682.

history

Rieth initially belonged to the original parish of Westhausen . Wolff Ott was first mentioned in a document in 1473 as a pastor. From 1516 the All Saints Church was a parish church . Since 2002 the place belongs to the Hellinger Kirchsprengel.

The current church building dates back to 1682, when a major renovation was carried out. The core of the building is a medieval chapel, the Romanesque remains of which can be seen in the sacristy in the form of a barrel vault and by the windows. The choir with a simple ribbed vault is Gothic in design. After 1779 renovations were carried out several times. The last major repairs with new colors took place in the 1990s and was completed with an inauguration in 1998.

architecture

It is a fortified church with a defensive wall up to two meters high and originally also with a moat. A gatehouse, temporarily used as a school building, forms the southern entrance to the churchyard.

The nave , a large stone block, has white plastered outer walls. The gable facade with partially walled-up windows and a portal is striking. The long sides are divided by various gothic tracery windows. Above the entrance portal on the south side there is an ornate Saxon diamond-shaped wreath coat of arms with the letters “VGGEHZS” (By God's grace, Ernst Duke of Saxony ). Underneath it says "1682 THIS GODTES HAVS HAS BEEN ERBAVED: NICOLAVS VLRICH SCHVLDHEIS". The roof, which is covered with red tiles, has three dormers on both sides . The three-story church tower stands above the choir. He has a spiky pointed helmet made of two pyramids placed on top of each other . The top end is formed by the tower button and the weather vane . Three chilled iron bells hang in the church tower , which were cast in 1919 and 1958.

The interior of the nave , separated from the choir by a pointed triumphal arch , is spanned by a baroque ceiling decorated with two small and one large medallion . The latter shows stylized grapes in the center. Two-storey galleries and benches in the ship with small wooden doors are available for sitting.

Interior

The most remarkable part of the interior is the pulpit from around 1780. Its painted parapet areas show Christ with the globe in the middle, and the evangelists on the right and left. The baptismal font , which was created at the end of the 18th century, is located in the choir . He wears the Archangel Michael as a figure . In front of it is the oak altar from the late 19th century. Colored leaded glass windows from 1920 decorate the choir room.

The organ from 1833 is the work of the Heldburg master organ builder Conrad Adam Laurenz Heybach. It has 16 registers on two manuals and a pedal mechanism with mechanical slide chests and a brochure in the style of classicism . Between 2009 and 2014, a 67,000 euro restoration was carried out by Orgelbau Schönefeld .
