Almirante Tamandaré do Sul , officially Portuguese Município de Almirante Tamandaré do Sul , is a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . The small town is located at an altitude of 600 m in the northern part of the state and is around 312 km from the capital Porto Alegre . The population was estimated at 1 July 2019 at 1964 inhabitants, at the last census in 2010 there were still 2067 inhabitants. They are called Tamandarenses ( tamandarenses ) and live on a community area of around 265.3 km².

Adjacent places are Carazinho , Chapada , Coqueiros do Sul , Nova Boa Vista and Sarandi . In the eastern municipal area, the BR-386 runs in a north-south direction.
climate
The place has a tropical, warm and temperate climate, Cfa according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 18.7 ° C, the average rainfall is 1770 mm per year.
history
The place is named after the imperial commander of the Navy Joaquim Marques Lisboa (1807-1897) , as is the city of Almirante Tamandaré in the state of Paraná . At first only a district of the municipality Passo Fundo , then of Carazinho , the municipality was detached from Carazinho on April 16, 1996. The actual emancipation took place a few years later after local elections in October 2000, so that on January 1, 2001 the city legislature could be set up for the first time.
Local politics
The first mayor was João Domingos Rodrigues da Silva. City prefect has been Valdeci Gomes da Silva of the Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT) since the local elections in 2016 for the 2017 to 2010 term of office . The legislature rests with a city council, the eight vereadores of the Câmara Municipal.
