Aloe elgonica is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet elgonica refers to the occurrence of the species on Mount Elgon .

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe elgonica grows trunk-forming, branched and forms dense clumps that can sometimes reach a diameter of up to 2 meters. The upright or prostrate trunks are up to 1 meter and more long. The 20 to 24 triangular, pointed leaves form dense rosettes . The dark green, often reddish tinged leaf blade is up to 40 centimeters long and 9 centimeters wide. The leaf surface is smooth. The pricking teeth on the leaf margin are 8 to 9 millimeters long and 10 to 15 millimeters apart. The leaf sap is dry yellow.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence is simple or consists of three to four branches and is 50 to 70 centimeters long. The dense, cylindrical-conical grapes are 18 centimeters long and 8 to 9 centimeters. The ovate-pointed bracts have a length of 5 millimeters and are 4 millimeters wide. The orange-red flowers are yellowish at their mouth. They are on 20 to 25 millimeter long flower stalks . The flowers are 40 millimeters long and narrowed briefly at their base. At the level of the ovary , they have a diameter of 7 to 8 millimeters. They are slightly narrowed above this and finally widened towards their mouth. Your tepals are not fused together over a length of 15 millimeters. The stamens and the pen stand out 3 to 5 millimeters from the flower.
