Alon Liel ( Hebrew אלון ליאל, Born October 31, 1948 in Tel Aviv ) is a former Israeli diplomat .

Life

Alon Liel is married and has three children. He joined the foreign service in 1971. From 1973 to 1977 he received a Bachelor of Business Administration and International Relations from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , where he received his PhD in Economics from 1984 to 1986 with The Dependence on Imported Energy and its Impact on Turkey's Foreign Policy and from 1997 to 2000 Lecturer at the Chair of International Relations. From 1979 to 1981 he was Vice Consul in Chicago with the Midwest Division . From 1981 to 1983 he was Chargé d'affaires in Ankara . From 1986 to 1989 he was assistant to the director general of Misrad HaHutz (Israeli Foreign Ministry). From 1988 to 1989 he was spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry . From 1990 to 1992 he was Consul General in Atlanta with Southeastern United States.

From 1992 to 1994 Alon Liel was ambassador to Pretoria and consecutively accredited to the governments of Maputo , Mozambique and Harare Zimbabwe .

On May 9, 1994, Liel was one of the guests alongside Yasser Arafat in a speech given by Nelson Mandela on the occasion of his election as President . Joe Modise called for an end to the special relationship with Israel.

From 1994 to 1996 he was General Director of Misrad ha-Kalkalah we ha-Tichnun (Ministry of Economics and Planning). From 1997 to 1999 he was an advisor to Ehud Barak . From November 2000 to April 2001 he was Director General of the Israeli Foreign Ministry . Liel was a member of the Israeli delegation at the UN headquarters . From January 21 to 27, 2001, he was a member of the Israeli delegation in negotiations with representatives of the government of Hosni Mubarak in Taba .
