After Russell was not allowed to play in 2011 due to a low SAT score from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), he attended Milford Academy to improve academically. As part of the final squad reduction to 53 players before the start of the regular season , he was dismissed. The following day, however, he was signed up for the Practice Squad. On December 29, 2018, he was promoted to the active squad. After initially surviving the squad downsizing to 53 players before the start of the 2019 regular season, he was released a day later.

According to the NFL

In the first draft of the re-established XFL , he was selected as the sixth player in the ninth round in the first phase (skill position) of the St. Louis BattleHawks .
