The alpine autumn timeless ( Colchicum alpinum ) is a plant species from the genus of the timeless ( Colchicum ) in the family of the timeless plants (Colchicaceae).

The common name Schneekaterl is also used for the Lungau region .

The alpine autumn crocus is a perennial tuber that reaches heights of growth of 5 to 8 centimeters.

In spring, 2 to 3 leaves , measuring 8 to 15 × 0.2 to 1.4 centimeters, come to the fore with the 15 to 20 millimeter capsule from the 1 to 2.5 × 1 to 1.5 centimeters measuring tuber.

The 1 to 2 flowers are narrow, bell-shaped to funnel-shaped. The anthers are 2 to 3 millimeters long. The perigone tips are narrowly lanceolate, purple-pink and sometimes white. The scar is punctiform. The flowering period extends from July to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 54 or approx. 120.

Occurrence

The alpine autumn crocus occurs in the Alps (France, Italy and Southwest Switzerland), the Apennines , Corsica and Sicily on dry, lime-poor mountain meadows at altitudes of 600 to 2000 meters.
