Oisans

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oisans [ waˈzɑ̃ ] is an area in the French High Alps , where the mountain range exceeds the four thousand meter mark for the last time before it merges further south into the gentler Maritime Alps and then flattens out towards the Mediterranean .

Valleys

The Oisans includes the valley of the Romanche (la Vallée de la Romanche) and its tributaries

with the mountains that border them. These include parts of the Belledonne , Taillefer , Écrins and Grandes Rousses massifs . The Oisans coincides almost exactly with the French cantons of La Grave ( Hautes-Alpes ) and Bourg-d'Oisans ( Isère ). Famous ski resorts such as L'Alpe d'Huez , often the end point of the queen stage of the Tour de France , La Grave or Les Deux Alpes, are located here . The main town is Le Bourg-d'Oisans in the Romanche Valley (on the east-west route Grenoble - Briançon - Turin ). The Mecca of mountaineers is La Bérarde in the high valley of the Vénéon.

mountains

The height differences in the Oisans are enormous. Le Bourg-d'Oisans is 720 meters above sea level, the Barre des Écrins , the southernmost four-thousand-meter peak in the Alps , culminates at 4,102 meters.

The center of the Oisans is the Écrins National Park , established in 1973 and encompassing the heart of the Haut Dauphiné . This area is often referred to as the roughest mountains in the Alps. The main peaks of the most important mountain ranges in the Écrins massif are listed under the keyword Dauphiné Alps .

Overwhelming views of the heavily glaciated high peaks of Meije and Barre des Écrins are offered by the Col du Galibier and the Col du Lautaret , if you come from the north of the Maurienne .
