Alphonse Gallegos OAR (born February 20, 1931 in Albuquerque , New Mexico , United States , † October 6, 1991 in Yuba City ) was an American religious and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Sacramento .

Life

Alphonse Gallegos joined the Congregation of the Augustinian Recollects in and received on 24 May 1958, the sacrament of Holy Orders . From 1979 he worked in the Diocese of Sacramento, where he headed the Department for Hispanic Affairs .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Sasabe and auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Sacramento on August 24, 1981 . He was ordained episcopal on November 4th of that year by the Bishop of Sacramento, Francis Anthony Quinn . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of San Francisco , John Raphael Quinn , and the Archbishop of Santa Fe , Robert Fortune Sanchez .

Gallego died on October 6, 1991 in a car accident. He was first buried in St. Mary Cemetery .

At the request of his religious community, the diocese of Sacramento opened the beatification process for Gallegos on December 4, 2005 . On March 27, 2010, his remains were reburied in a new tomb in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Sacramento. Pope Francis recognized him with a decree of July 8, 2016, the heroic degree of virtue .
