The tower ruins were carefully secured and renovated between 1995 and 1997. Originally the round keep was 33 m high and had an outer diameter of 15 m. Its walls were up to three and a half meters thick and it had five floors.

history

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1153. It belonged to Henry the Lion since the 12th century . After his death, his son Otto IV came into their possession. She later inherited Otto the child . Other owners were Albrecht the Tall One and Heinrich the Wonderful . In the 14th and 15th centuries the castle was used as the seat of the Dukes of Grubenhagen and as the widow's seat of the family. It was last inhabited by the Duchess Elisabeth von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen, who died in 1513. Then the plant began to deteriorate.

On his trip to the Harz Mountains in September 1824, Heinrich Heine also climbed the castle ruins and describes them as follows:

“Before I took the road, I climbed the ruins of the ancient Osteroder castle. They only consist of half of a large, thick-walled tower that looks as if it has been eaten by cancer. "
