The old church on the market in Nordhorn is the church of the evangelical reformed community and the oldest architectural monument in the city.

history

The Old Church went from a mission church of the Holy Liudger (Ludgerus) out and was on 6 June 1445, the same day as the church of the monastery Frenswegen , consecrated . Until the Reformation it belonged to the Catholic diocese of Münster . In 1544, the county of Bentheim converted to the Lutheran creed, in 1588 most of the county councils accepted the reformed creed.

The church is located on the market square not far from the Vechte . Since 1950/51 with the New Church on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, a second Evangelical Reformed church was built, it has been called the Old Church.

The late Gothic , with large dark gray Bentheim sandstone deluded -Quadern building is a three-aisled hall church of three yokes with a choir of a yoke and polygon final five pages of an octagon , which on the north side of a lower zweijochigen sacristy is flanked. The vaults are made of brick , their supporting ribs are carved from natural stone . The west tower, built later, opens its tower hall in the height and width of the central nave to the east. A stair tower protrudes on the south side. Its later development is visible in the wall joint between the nave and the tower. This is supported by a document from 1489, in which Count Everwyn von Bentheim allows the citizens and parishioners of Nordhorn to build a stone bell tower on the church, with the condition that they be guarded during feuding times. The church tower can be climbed; it offers a viewing platform at a height of over 70 meters.

The interior shows an exposed ornament vault painting and a Last Supper table from 1600.

organ

The organ was built in 1970 by the organ builder Van Vulpen (Utrecht). The slider chest instrument has 27 stops on two manuals and a pedal. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
