Altensteig is a district of the Upper Swabian market Dirlewang in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The place got its name from the fact that it is located on the old path. It overcomes about 40 meters in altitude over a length of about 340 meters and is located in the southern part of the elongated village. It was the connection between Ottobeuren and Bad Wörishofen on the old trade route.

The village is connected to the main town about 2.5 kilometers to the west via the MN 4 district road. In the east, the village is bordered by the high plateau with the forest pieces Unteres and Oberes Bauernholz . The Wettenäcker areas to the west of the town are mainly used for agriculture. The Hungerbach flows between Altensteig and Dirlewang .

history

St. Francis and George

The first written mention of the place was in 1256, when Schwigger von Mindelheim owned a farm in the village. The bailiwick rights were sold in 1303 by his grandson Schwigger V. to the Rottenbuch monastery . The Augustinian monastery Mindelheim received the mill in Gernstall from Jos Hürnbach zu Altensteig in 1390. In the purchase contract of the Mindelheim rule of 1363, with which the Schwiggers sold the rule to the Augsburg people of Hochschlitz, the place was named "daz geriht ze Altensteig". In the agreement to partition the rule of Mindelheim from Barbara von Frundsberg, Ulrich von Frundsberg and his brother Hans von Frundsberg, the place was listed as "the village of Altensteig". In the period that followed, the property was split up into various citizens of Mindelheim, Memmingen and Kaufbeurer and the mayor Kaspar Ulmann von Dillingen an der Donau . The Steingaden Monastery and the Catherine's Monastery Augsburg were also wealthy in the area. With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803, the political municipality Altensteig was created, which was incorporated into the municipality Dirlewang on July 1, 1972. A land consolidation took place from 1934 to 1936.

Spiritually, the place was divided into two parts since at least 1616. The southern part belonged with Osterlauchdorf to the parish of Dorschhausen , the northern part to the parish of Mindelau . This border still exists and runs from the St. Franziskus and Georg chapel in a westerly direction. Accordingly, the deceased from Altensteig are still buried in Dorschhausen or Mindelau today. Until 1946 the children were also educated in these places. At that time, the first school was set up in Altensteig, and from September 26, 1949, the students were taught in the newly built schoolhouse. On January 1, 1966, the place joined the Dirlewang School Association.

The former Zehntstadel was demolished after the First World War , the Schafstadel on the southern edge of the village in 1956 and the parish hall or poor house were demolished in 1973/1974.
