The Alvis 12/70 was a passenger car that Alvis manufactured from 1937 to 1940 as the successor to the Firebird model .
The car had the four-cylinder in - line engine of the previous model with overhead valves and a displacement of 1842 cm³. In 12/70, however, this produced 62.5 bhp (46 kW). The separate chassis could be provided with various superstructures, e.g. B. a four-door sedan, a two-door convertible or a roadster. Most of the bodies came from Mulliners from Birmingham and Alvis' long-time supplier Cross & Ellis. An open four-seater touring car body was also still available, although it was largely considered obsolete at the time. After Cross & Ellis became insolvent and was dissolved, the coachbuilder Whittingham & Mitchel from the London borough of Fulham took over this task from 1938 onwards .
The front and rear rigid axles were suspended from semi-elliptical leaf springs. The maximum speed was approx. 127 km / h, depending on the structure. The 12/70 had a shorter chassis than its predecessor. In conjunction with the more powerful engine, there were sportier characteristics and at the same time a greater gap to the six-cylinder model Silver Crest TF introduced the year before . The 12/70 thus indirectly continued the tradition of the four-cylinder sports model 12/60 discontinued in 1933 .
In 1940 the type 12/70 was discontinued due to the war . In 1945 the successors TA 14 / TB 14 appeared .
