Alwig von Sulz (1586–1632)

Alwig von Sulz also Alwig XII. or Alwig III. (of the Klettgau line), according to recent research Alwig X. (* December 13, 1586 in Speyer ; † March 9, 1632 in Bamberg ) was the ruling landgrave in Klettgau from 1616 to 1628.

Life

Alwig took over the government in the Landgraviate of Klettgau in 1616 after the death of his father, Karl Ludwig zu Sulz . In 1619 Tiengen Castle was rebuilt under him . In 1628 he resigned in favor of his brother Karl Ludwig Ernst von Sulz in order to devote himself entirely to his military career. He served under Tilly , the general of the Catholic League, and fought in the Valtellina , among other places . Alwig was killed in 1632 in a cavalry battle near Bamberg. Tilly left his body in Jestetten in the Landgraviate of Klettgau, where he was buried on March 29, 1632 in front of the high altar donated by him in the old parish church (demolished in 1961).

Origin, marriage and offspring

Alwig was the son of Karl Ludwig zu Sulz from the family of the Counts of Sulz and Maria von Oettingen . His first marriage was to Katharina Ludmilla von Lobkowicz and had a son with her:

  • Ulrich von Sulz (born June 13, 1619; † November 9, 1650 in Jestetten) ∞ Katharina von Hohenems

In his second marriage he was married to Veronika von Spaur , a daughter of Leo zu Spaur and Pflaum, and Countess Julia von Fedrici, Valcamonica and Valsabio, wife of Ossana . She had the siblings:
