Amritsar is a district in the northern Indian state of Punjab .

The area is 2683 km². The administrative seat is the city of Amritsar . It is the second most populous district in the state.

history

During the British rule over India, Amritsar was part of the Lahore division and was administratively divided into 3 areas, namely Amritsar, Ajnala and Tarn Taran. As part of the partition of India , the Amritsar district was separated from the rest of the division in 1947 and given to India. Some parts of the Lahore division such as Patti and Khem Karan fell to the Amritsar district due to the division. During the partition, the district's Muslim population (around 30%) fled to Pakistan , while Hindus and Sikhs from western Punjab in newly created Pakistan migrated in the opposite direction.

The population is 2,490,656 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 15.47%. Amritsar has a gender ratio of 922 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 76.27% in 2011, an increase of almost 6 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the national average. Almost 68.9% of the population are Sikhs , 27.7% are Hindus , 2.2% are Christians , 0.5% are Muslims , 0.1% are Jainas and 0.4% did not indicate any religious affiliation.

Almost 53.6% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Amritsar with 1,132,383 inhabitants.
