Anders Ångström (1814–1874)

Anders Jonas Ångström ( pronunciation : [ ˌanːdəʂ ˈɔŋːstɾœm ]; * August 13, 1814 in Lögdö bruk , Timrå municipality ; † June 21, 1874 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish astronomer and physicist and co-founder of astrospectroscopy . The unit of measurement for wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, which is a ten-millionth of a millimeter, is named after him.

Individual evidence

Ångström studied mathematics and physics at Uppsala University . In 1839 he received his doctorate and taught physics at the university, from 1858 until his death as a professor . In 1870/71 he was rector of the university. From 1867 Ångström was also secretary of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala , of which he had been a member since 1851. He was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (since 1850), the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund (since 1866), the Prussian Academy of Sciences (since 1867), the Royal Society (since 1870), the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences (since 1873) and the Académie des Sciences (also since 1873).

In his research the study of the solar spectrum was in the foreground. 1862 he rendered in this context the detection of hydrogen - spectral lines . He also determined the presence of other elements in the solar spectrum and in 1868 published an atlas with spectral lines of the sun (Recherche sur les specters solaires, Uppsala).

The unit of length Ångström was named after Ångström . Today it is mainly used in solid-state , semiconductor and atomic physics as well as in crystallography and in general in chemistry , because the lengths occurring there are often a few angstroms.

Today a building at Uppsala University bears his name ( Ångströmlaboratoriet ). In addition, the moon crater Angström and the asteroid (42487) Ångström were named after Ångström.
