Life

Kallenberg, son of the sexton Hans Andersson and his wife Gertrud Svensdotter, received on May 26, 1858 a bronze medal from his craft school "for progress in school". He studied painting from March 30, 1861 to 1866 at the Stockholm Art Academy, especially with the landscape painter Edvard Bergh (1828-1880). In 1867 he went to Düsseldorf . There he took private lessons from the landscape painter Andreas Achenbach until 1869 . In 1871 and 1872 he spent some time in Kilsmo near Örebro , and in 1873 he visited the Växjö area . In 1872 he switched to the Düsseldorf landscape painter Eugen Dücker , whose lessons he took until 1873. In 1874 he went on study trips to Paris and London . In the same year he traveled to Berlin , where he stayed until 1877 and associated with the animal painter Albert Brendel . In 1877 he rented a studio in Stockholm. In 1878 he went on further study trips to Holland and Belgium . On June 1, 1879, he took on a teaching position for animal painting at the Stockholm Art Academy, in 1881 he also took over the subject of landscape painting there. In 1886 Kallenberg became a member of the Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm.

Since his time in Düsseldorf, Kallenberg, who remained a bachelor throughout his life, lived a rather withdrawn life. His contemporaries described him as a modest, well-groomed appearance. His interest in music was highlighted. In old age he was plagued by the obsession that he would become economically poor, that his works could be stolen and his sketches could be copied.

During his travels, Kallenberg made a large number of sketches that not only depict animals, but also landscapes, navies, churches, farms and vegetation. These sketches formed the basis for his oil paintings, which he painted in the studio. A coniferous forest , which Karl XV. Belongs to the early pictures from Düsseldorf . acquired in 1868. His early paintings show a bright sky, while the later ones showed an overcast sky and foggy weather. The latter became his trademark. This not only made him economically successful, it also won the approval of critics, such as that of August Strindberg . The art historian Georg Nordensvan wrote:

“(…) Anders Kallenberg (…) prefers to portray gloomy moods: gray-blue skies, howling storms that bend the pastures along the wayside, horses or sheep that frightenedly crowd one another in anticipation of the approaching storm. Kallenberg's animal studies are rich and solid, he paints his bulls, calves and sheep with accurate characteristics and strong colors. But his painted pictures were often leaked. "
