from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

András Mócsy (also Andreas Mócsy, born May 15, 1929 in Budapest ; † January 20, 1987 ibid) was a Hungarian provincial Roman archaeologist , epigraphist and ancient historian who also dealt with ancient onomastics . His most important publications received international attention.

Life

The private collection of his father, the veterinarian and university professor János Mócsy, aroused his interest in antiquity . After attending the Piarist High School in Budapest, the young Mócsy studied Latin between 1947 and 1949 at what was then Péter Pázmány University, specializing in history and archeology. From 1951 to 1959 he was employed as a research assistant at the Hungarian National Museum , directed many excavations in western Hungary and published the results in numerous research reports. Even before this time he turned to epigraphy. In 1950 his contribution to the organization of the military town in Aquincum appeared and in 1956 he published the monograph The population from Pannonia up to the Marcomann Wars, which appeared in German in 1959 . In April 1957 Mócsy took part with numerous scholars of classical studies, including the classical philologist István Borzsák (1914-2007), who was branded as a state dissident , in founding the Eirene Committee to promote classical studies in the socialist countries in Liblitz and Prague . In 1959 he moved to the Loránd Eötvös University and completed his habilitation there in 1961 at the archaeological chair. In 1962 Mócsy became an associate professor and in 1969 a full professor of archeology. In addition, he held a professorship for ancient history. One of his students was Barnabás Lőrincz (1951–2012). In the following years he presented extensive ancient historical and Roman provincial publications. In addition to these activities, Mócsy was president of the historical-philological class at Loránd Eötvös University. After a long and serious illness, he died in Budapest.

Mócsy was editor and member of the editorial board of several national and international magazines. His work on the Roman Empire, with a particular focus on the Danube provinces, has been published in numerous languages. From 1966 he was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).
