André Blank (born February 22, 1914 in Raeren ; † October 28, 1987 there ) was a Belgian painter.

Live and act

Andreas Joseph Blank was the son of a teacher and passionate painter. He studied at the Liège School of Art, "Institut supérieur des Beaux-Arts St-Luc" under Félix Proth. Later he taught at the “Institut supérieur d'Arts graphiques et plastiques” in Tournai and at the “Institut des Beaux-Arts St-Luc”, as well as at the architecture school “Institut supérieur d'architecture St-Luc” in Liège. In 1979 he gave up his teaching activities.

His early works appear in delicate colors and are inspired by Impressionism . In a wild period he painted in the style of Fauvism , only to switch to abstract painting after a period of Cubism . After a transition period in which numerous black and white graphics were created, he found his way back to color in his late work.

His first exhibition took place in Verviers in 1948 , followed by exhibitions in Eupen, Liège and Brussels from 1963 to 1965. Numerous exhibitions took place in his house and studio, the moated castle Haus Raeren . Retrospectives were in Stavelot in 1989, in the IKOB - Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007 and in 2014 in the Belgian Broadcasting Building in Eupen.

Various works by Blank are in state collections, in collections of the Province of Liège and in private collections.

In addition to painting, André Blank designed numerous church windows, for example in Rocherath or Mackenbach , as well as for several listed places of worship, such as in the tower of the destroyed abbey church of Stavelot and the Anna chapel in Raeren. He also worked as a fresco painter . In 1985 a biography was published by the art critic Georges Schmits, which records Blank's artistic life.

André Blank was a recipient of the Leopold Order and from 1985 a member of the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique .
