André Godard (born January 21, 1881 in Chaumont , † July 31, 1965 in Paris ) was a French architect , archaeologist and art historian . He was also director of the Iranian Archeological Service (IAS) ( Edāreh-ye kol-e 'atiqāt ).

Life

After graduating from the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris , André Godard studied archeology of the Middle East , specializing primarily in Iran . This was followed by a collaboration with Ernst Herzfeld and Henri Viollet in Iraq ( Samarra ) and Egypt .

After the First World War , Godard married Yedda Reuilly (1889–1979), who had studied Oriental languages, and in 1922 took part in a French archaeological delegation in Afghanistan . There he devoted himself to studying the Buddha statues of Bamiyan . In 1925 an exhibition on this Buddhist pilgrimage followed in the Musée Guimet .

From 1928 to 1953 and from 1956 to 1960 André Godard was Director of the Iranian Archeological Service (IAS). This was set up by Reza Shah after the French monopoly on archaeological research in Iran had expired. During that time Godard designed the Bastan Museum ( Museh-ye Irān-e Bāstān (Museum of Ancient Iran)), which he later directed.

In collaboration with other architects, the restoration and design of several important buildings followed, including the Institute of Fine Arts of the University of Tehran , whose curriculum he later developed as dean based on the model of the French École des Beaux-Arts.

After his return to France in 1960, Godard wrote the book L'Art de l'Iran , in which he presented the development of Iranian architecture - the focus of his research.
