André Marchand

André Marchand (* 1945 in Dresden ) is a German pianist .

Life

On his father's side he is of Huguenot descent. He grew up as a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor under Rudolf Mauersberger . He owes decisive impulses for his musicianship to the Saxon choral tradition with its cornerstones Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach .

After moving to West Germany, Marchand began studying music at the Freiburg University of Music and at the same time he studied German , Romance studies and philosophy at the University of Freiburg . In addition to the piano , he took up conducting , chamber music , song and composition. Before graduating from Carl Seemann , he won the German University Competition and received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation , which enabled him to study for three years in Paris . He studied at the Conservatoire National inPierre Sancan , as well as at the Ecole Normale de Musique with Yvonne Lefébure and Thierry de Brunhoff , in whose class he obtained the License de Concert with distinction. He was a scholarship holder of the Albert Roussel Foundation. During this time he had lessons with Dieter Weber and courses with Claudio Arrau , Stefan Askenase , Max Deutsch and Nadia Boulanger .

From Paris, at the age of 27, he was appointed visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin , and also at the University of Iowa as Associate in Performance at the Center for New Music (Rockefeller scholarship holder). He was the winner of the Young Artists in Concert, New York . After winning the "Young Artists" concerts of the German Music Council , he returned to Germany. An international concert career with stations in South Korea, North Africa, the Soviet Union, Italy, USA, Japan, Greece, Sweden and others followed. In 1975 he was offered a professorship at the Freiburg University of Music and in 1985 moved to the Stuttgart University of Music in the same position . International concert engagements in connection with the Goethe-Institut have taken him time and again to Asia and the USA as well as to 12 African countries. He has also given master classes in Vicenza (Italy), Calonge (Spain) and Krakow . In Stuttgart, he leads an annual piano course at the Piano-Centrum Matthaes.

He was a soloist with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra , the New Japan Philharmonic , the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra , the Seoul Sinfonietta, the Cairo National Orchestra, the Vicenza Piano Quartet and the Fine Arts Quartet. Marchand's repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the modern age. In Stuttgart he could be heard almost every year since 1985 with large concert programs.

Many of his students are already professors at German, American, Japanese, Spanish and Korean universities. Marchand's lessons and play are shaped by the understanding of the text of the Seemann School and the pianistic principles of the Cortot School. But Josef Mertin's performance practice in Vienna also influenced his playing and teaching through the harpsichord and clavichord playing.
