Andrea Adolfati (* 1711, 1721 or 1722 in Venice ; † October 28, 1760 in Padua ) was an Italian opera composer .

Life

After completing his studies with Baldassare Galuppi , Adolfati first became Kapellmeister at the Church of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice . In 1745 he followed a call from the Archduchess of Modena to work as Kapellmeister there. During this time his divertimento La pace fra la virtù e la bellezza was created , which was performed on January 1, 1746 in the court theater there. In 1746 he composed recitatives, choirs and six arias for the children's opera pasticcio Lo starnuto d'Ercole (German: Das Niesen des Herakles ) by Johann Adolph Hasse . Like his subsequent satirical opera Didone abbandonata with puppets, it was performed in the small, newly opened Teatro di San Girolamo by Abate Antonio Labia in the parish of San Girolamo in Cannaregio in Venice. In 1748 he left his position in Modena and became music director at the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato in Genoa. On May 30, 1760 he was appointed to succeed Giacomo Rampini as Kapellmeister in Padua , where he remained until his death in the same year. In spite of his church duties, he often traveled to the respective Italian cities to perform his operas.

Adolfati's style is conventional and follows on from his teacher Galuppi. His spiritual works are influenced by Benedetto Marcello . He is credited with introducing the 5/4 time that he used in an aria in his opera Arianna , and one of his early works uses a 7/4 time. In 1753 Pietro Metastasio attended a performance of his opera La clemenza di Tito in Vienna . Although he did not particularly like their music, he wrote polite letters to Adolfati in Genoa in 1755 and 1757.
