Andreas Balog

Andreas (András) Balog (* 1946 in Budapest ; † 2008 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sociologist . As an important representative of sociological theory, he was concerned with clarifying sociological theories , which he saw as neglected . His monograph Social Phenomena. Identity, structure and explanation are considered to be the basic work.

Life

Andreas Balog studied sociology , philosophy and political science with a minor in art history at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1973 on the subject of the individual in Max Weber's sociology. On the critique of a social-theoretical position . He completed his habilitation in 1988 at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at the University of Vienna with a reconstruction of actions. Everyday intuitions and sociological concept formation . He worked as a freelance sociologist, was a scholarship holder of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main from 1978 to 1980 , and from 1992 to 2002 he was a full-time lecturer at the Federal Administration Academy for Executives. This activity allowed him to continue teaching and publishing at various universities. In July 1999 he was awarded the title of Associate University Professor . From 1983 Balog was a member of the editorial board and from 1987 to 1995 editorial spokesman for the Österreichische Zeitschrift für Soziologie ; from 1997 to 1999 he was co-editor of the journal European Societies of the ESA ( European Sociological Association ). He was co-founder in 1990 and until 2008 spokesman for the Sociological Theory Section of the Austrian Society for Sociology .

András Balog was interested in theory , but he never worked completely apart from empirical research. Empirical works on various areas of contemporary Austrian society make up a not inconsiderable part of his writings.

He was visiting professor at the University of Linz , University of Salzburg , University of Klagenfurt and Goethe University in Frankfurt.
