Andreas Beck (born June 5, 1965 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German dramaturge , theater maker and artistic director .

Live and act

Beck studied theater studies as a major, art history and sociology as a minor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the DAMS in Bologna . After completing his master's degree with Günther Erken, the founder of the dramaturgy course at the Bavarian Theater Academy, and working as an assistant director at the Vienna Burgtheater in 1991 , he worked as a freelance director in the following years. From 1994 to 1997 Andreas Beck was dramaturge at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich, from 1997 to 2000 managing dramaturge and head of the author project “ Dichter ans Theater ” at the Schauspiel des Staatstheater Stuttgart . In 2000 he became a dramaturge and head of the writing project “Writing Theater ” at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg . In 2002 he moved to the Burgtheater Vienna as a dramaturge .

From July 2007 Andreas Beck was artistic director and managing director of the Schauspielhaus Wien . Under his leadership, the Schauspielhaus saw itself as a theater of the contemporary, as a scene of contemporary literary ventures, as an author's and ensemble theater in the “classical” sense. The focus was on young and recent drama. Andreas Beck was awarded the Nestroy Special Prize 2008 for the new start in the Schauspielhaus Wien .

Furthermore, Beck was a lecturer at the University of Hamburg from 2000 to 2011, now the Theater Academy Hamburg , and has been a lecturer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in Vienna since 2004 . He also worked as a translator from English and Italian for various stage publishers. In 2005 he was a member of the jury of the Austrian drama competition Speaking over borders .

In 2015 Beck succeeded Georges Delnon as director at Theater Basel . He nominated Laura Berman to his team as opera director and extended the ballet director Richard Wherlock , who has been in office since 2001 . He took over the direction of the play himself, as managing dramaturge he appointed Almut Wagner , as in-house directors the Swiss Thom Luz , the Basel-born Australian director and author Simon Stone , the Austrian Nora Schlocker and the German Julia Hölscher . The Basel Theater is the only three-division house in the German-speaking area that is run equally by four women and four men. In 2018, Theater Basel was named Theater of the Year .

In September 2019, Beck succeeded Martin Kušej as director of the Munich Residenztheater . The Residenztheater under his artistic direction stands for an ensemble theater that focuses on contemporary drama with world premieres and new poems in addition to maintaining a classical repertoire. Classic materials and texts are questioned from the here and now and experience a new poetry or transfer. With the world premiere of Ewald Palmetshofer's theatrical text The Lost , which was commissioned for the Residenztheater , the first season of the new artistic director opened on October 19, 2019 in the Residenztheater.
