Georges Delnon
Georges Delnon (born March 20, 1958 in Zurich ) is a Swiss director , theater director and university lecturer . From 2006 to 2015 he headed the Theater Basel and has been the opera director of the Hamburg State Opera since the 2015/16 season .
Life
Delnon grew up in Bern . After studying art history and musicology at the Universities of Bern and Friborg and composing at the Bern Conservatory , he began directing operas and drama in Bern, Biel / Bienne at the Biel Music Theater and Lucerne . The main focus of his directing activities were increasingly world premieres of music theaters such as 22.13 by Mark Andre ( Munich Biennale / Festival d'Automne à Paris / Opéra National de Paris ), Hellhörig by Carola Bauckholt (Munich Biennale / Theater Basel), Der Alte vom Berge by Bernhard Lang ( Schwetzinger SWR Festival / Theater Basel) or 3 women by Wolfgang Rihm (Theater Basel). In addition, numerous productions in Europe, America and Asia. The first film work followed.
As a university lecturer, Delnon began teaching at the Folkwang University , later in Frankfurt, Montepulciano and Basel. From 2002 he received a professorship for scenic work at the Mainz University of Music . In 2014 he was a guest lecturer at the University of Zurich .
He began his career as artistic director at the Koblenz Theater (1996 to 1999); it was followed by the Mainz State Theater (until 2006) and the Basel Theater (until 2015). Under his leadership, Theater Basel was twice voted “Opera House of the Year” by the Opernwelt critics' poll (2009 and 2010). From 2009 to 2016 he was also artistic director of the music theater of the Schwetzingen SWR Festival . Delnon has been artistic director of the Hamburg State Opera since 2015 , and Kent Nagano is the general music director .
Awards and honors
In 2003 Delnon was appointed honorary professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and received the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate . Georges Delnon has been a member of the Academy of Performing Arts since 2002 .
