Mark Andre

Mark Andre (born May 10, 1964 in Paris ; until 2007: Marc André ) is a German-French composer in the field of new music .

Life

From 1987 to 1993 Andre studied composition with Claude Ballif and Gérard Grisey at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique . In Paris he also did his doctorate at the École normal supérieure on the music of the Ars subtilior ( Le compossible musical de l'Ars subtilior ). In 1995 he received a grant from the French Foreign Ministry, which enabled him to continue his compositional studies at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts with Helmut Lachenmann . He studied electronic music with André Richard in the SWR experimental studio . In 1996 he was able to continue his studies in Stuttgart with a scholarship from the Akademie Schloss Solitude . Numerous other scholarships and fellowships followed.

Since Andre was awarded the prize of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg at the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2007 for his composition ... auf ... III , which completes his large-scale orchestral triptych ... auf ... , public attention has been raised directed even more to his work. But even before that Andre received numerous important prizes, for example at the Darmstadt Summer Courses ( Kranichsteiner Music Prize 1996). In 2002 he was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize. Andre is currently one of the most sought-after composers of new music. Living in Berlin , Andre teaches at the Frankfurt Music Academy and at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg. As part of the “into ...” project, a cooperation between Ensemble Modern and the Siemens Arts Program in collaboration with the Goethe Institute, Andres Stück üg , who worked together with the music computer scientist and sound engineer Joachim Haas of the experimental studio at SWR u. a. was developed in Istanbul, premiered in October 2008 in the Alte Oper Frankfurt by Ensemble Modern.

In 2009 he was appointed a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts and professor of composition at the Dresden University of Music . Since 2010 he has been a member of the Saxon Academy of the Arts . 2012: Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and member of the Bavarian Academy of the Arts from Munich. He lives in Berlin. On March 2, 2014, his opera Wunderzaichen was premiered in Stuttgart, directed by Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito .

In 2017 Andre was awarded the German Catholics' Art and Culture Prize.

music

Andre's music is technically and historically related to the tradition of the Darmstadt School. Andre received strong impulses for his own work from one of the most important “Darmstadt representatives”, Helmut Lachenmann, who as a composer played a key role in shaping the Darmstadt summer courses . On the other hand, in Andre's compositions there are always live electronic sound devices, such as those he used at IRCAM in Paris and in the SWR experimental studio in Freiburg / Br. got to know.
