Andreas Kirschning (born March 19, 1960 in Hamburg ) is a German chemist and university professor . He is professor at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at Leibniz University Hannover .

Career

Kirschning studied chemistry from 1979 to 1986 at the University of Hamburg and at the University of Southampton (1983 to 1984). He received his doctorate in 1989 under Ernst Schaumann at the University of Hamburg in the field of organic silicon chemistry . After a research stay (1989/90) with Heinz G. Floss at the University of Washington , Seattle , USA , supported by a Feodor Lynen research grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation , he began to work independently as the head of a junior research group from the Technical University of Clausthal , which led to a habilitation (venia legendi) in organic chemistry (1996). After a private lectureship at Clausthal University of Technology from 1996 to 2000, he moved to the Leibniz University of Hanover as Professor of Organic Chemistry . Visiting professorships and visiting professorships led him to the Humboldt University of Berlin (1997), the University of Wisconsin , Madison (USA), the Université de Rennes , France (2003), the Université Le Mans , France (2007), the Università di Roma “La Sapienza” , Italy (2007) and to the Université Louis Pasteur Strasbourg , France (2009, 2010 and 2011).

He is a member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .

Act

His research is located in chemical synthesis and is wide-ranging. He deals with the first syntheses and the structure elucidation of complex natural substances , such as the polyketides carolactone and the elansolides, the oligoamidic cystobactamides and the diterpene tonantzitlolon. The biological profile of these natural substances is usually also assessed in cooperation. This natural product-oriented work is methodically complemented by mutasyntheses of ansamycin - antibiotics such as maytansines and geldanamycin, as well as the use of terpene synthases for the generation of unnatural terpenoids with new olfactory properties.

In the course of the development of enabling technologies for organic synthesis, he was early and significantly involved in the use of solid-phase bound haloate (I) compounds and the introduction of flow chemistry and microreaction technology combined with inductive heating for organic chemistry. This resulted in the establishment of Chelona GmbH in 2002. Recently he expanded his scientific interest to the evolutionary importance of coenzymes and their role in connection with the RNA world hypothesis and chemical evolution (the origin of life).

Kirschning was among other things co-editor of RÖMPPonline (2002–2019) and has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board since then.
