Andreas Maurer (born September 7, 1919 in Trautmannsdorf an der Leitha ; † October 25, 2010 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) who served as governor of Lower Austria from 1966 to 1981 .

Youth and education

Andreas Maurer, born the second of three children, grew up on his parents' farm. From 1925 to 1933 he attended elementary school in Trautmannsdorf, then the agricultural college in Bruck an der Leitha .

From 1940 to 1945 he was a soldier of the Wehrmacht and fell in Italy in British captivity , from which he was dismissed already 1945th

Political career

From 1946 Maurer was politically active as a farmer's representative. The farmer Maurer was a councilor in Trautmannsdorf from 1951 to 1956 . From 1959 to 1964 he served as a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament and from 1964 to 1966 as regional councilor and president of the Austrian farmers' union . Furthermore, Maurer was chairman of the Lower Austrian Farmers' Union from 1970 to 1989.

From November 24, 1966 to January 22, 1981, Andreas Maurer held the office of governor of Lower Austria . During his tenure, the expansion of the road network was accelerated, the municipal structure was reformed and a modernization process was initiated in several areas (Lower Austrian Compulsory Schools Act 1972, Spatial Planning Act, Nature Conservation Act 1976, new state constitution). During his term of office, the large municipal reform in 1970, with which the number of municipalities in Lower Austria was reduced from 1281 - apart from a few small changes - to today's 573.

Maurer is also considered the "kingmaker" of numerous politicians at state and federal level. These included Karl Schleinzer , Liese Prokop , Siegfried Ludwig and his successor Erwin Pröll , who also saw him as a "fatherly friend".

Private

On July 9, 1944, while on leave from the war, Maurer married Hermine Berger, with whom he had six children between 1945 and 1959 - four sons and two daughters. His oldest child, son Andreas (* 1945), was mayor of Trautmannsdorf an der Leitha from 1986 to 2007.

Maurer was always connected to music. He joined brass music in his home town as early as 1932 and later became honorary president of the Lower Austrian brass music association. According to memories, Maurer always had his own mouthpiece of a bass flugelhorn with him, so that he could always play along on appropriate occasions. This mouthpiece was given to him as a burial gift along with his violin.

Appreciation

In 2012 the previously unnamed Hainburg Danube Bridge was renamed Andreas Maurer Bridge .
