Die Priester is a German-speaking singing group made up of three Roman Catholic priests .
history
The abbot primate Notker Wolf and the Cistercian monk Karl Wallner from Heiligenkreuz Abbey developed the project to combine pop music with classical music . Wolf and Wallner had already dealt with this topic, so Wallner was involved in the publication of The Cistercian Monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz .
After a long search, suitable candidates for the new project were found in Father Vianney Meister, the then abbot Rhabanus Petri von Schweiklberg and the Vienna diocesan priest Andreas Schätzle. Their debut album Spiritus Dei was released on October 21, 2011 , on which they reinterpreted works by Handel, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Smetana as well as contemporary titles such as Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen or This Path by Xavier Naidoo . The priests sing mainly in Latin and German.
On September 28, 2012, their second album, Rex Gloriae, was released, which compared to the first album has a slightly more religious edge . Also this time other artists can be heard besides the priests. The speaker Joachim Kerzel speaks texts for three pieces, and the soprano Mojca Erdmann sings a duet.
On February 14, 2013, the priests, together with Mojca Erdmann, took part in Our Song for Malmö with the song Meerstern, be greetings and took 10th place.
The model for Die Priest was Les Prêtres , a singing group from France that tried to combine modern pop music with classical music in a similar way. These in turn were inspired by The Priests from Ireland.
