Andreas Theodor Kruse

Andreas Abraham Theodor Kruse (born May 23, 1787 in Strelitz ; † November 29, 1873 in Stralsund ) was a merchant in Stralsund. He was Altermann des Gewandhauses (guild leader of the cloth makers), member of the Prussian state parliament and dedicated himself to local research.

Live and act

Andreas Theodor Kruse was the third of five children of the Mecklenburg glove maker Christian Dethloff Kruse. He came to the Stralsund high school in the former St. Katharinen monastery at the age of 10 . One of the most prominent students at this grammar school was Ernst Moritz Arndt , with whom Andreas Theodor had a lifelong friendship.

After finishing school, Kruse joined the trading house of the wealthy businessman Johann Wilhelm Glaser as an apprentice in 1801, and he married his youngest daughter Friederike in 1814. During the continental blockade imposed by Napoleon, long trips to Scandinavia and England from 1811 to 1813 brought him significant successes. In 1815 he took over the Glasersche trading house and founded a library for trade and commerce as well as a municipal trade school to revive the depressed economy.

At that time, Kruse was already concerned with the history of Pomerania , in particular with the history of Stralsund . He was particularly interested in poor relief, where he worked as an inspector and accounting administrator of the Johannis poor house for the establishment of winter food for children since 1824. He was a co-founder of the first nursery, which became a model for other Hanseatic cities .

In 1839 Kruse was appointed to the corporation of the deputies of the merchant class and earned merit in promoting commercial interests by significantly improving the connection to other seaside towns with the help of steam shipping. He also campaigned for the creation of a rail link to Berlin against considerable resistance.

As the Altermann of the Gewandhaus he belonged to the top of the citizenry and led the negotiations between the civic representatives and the city council. In 1848 he was a member of the trade congress in Frankfurt and witnessed the struggle to shape Germany in the Paulskirche . In 1849 he was elected to the Prussian House of Representatives by the old liberals and until 1863 he represented the interests of New Western Pomerania and Rügen in the areas of trade, industry and agriculture.

He initially joined the conservatives, who conditionally defended the Prussian constitution of 1848 imposed by Friedrich Wilhelm IV against great opposition. After the dissolution of the Second Chamber, Kruse was re-elected, but now joined the newly formed moderate liberals, whose program was the unification of Germany under Prussia's protection and top leadership.

As a result of his extensive political tasks as a member of the state parliament, as an alterman of the Gewandhaus and as administrator of several city foundations, as well as his time-consuming historical and literary studies about his hometown, there were serious restrictions on his business activities as a merchant. In addition, business went worse and worse as a result of the decline of the Hanseatic cities and the associated decline in the economic situation, which is why he had to give up the Andershof manor on the Sund.

His son Heinrich Kruse became a journalist, poet and writer, his grandson Francis Kruse became a high Prussian administrative officer.
