Andreas von Gundelsheimer

Andreas von Gundelsheimer (* 1668 in Feuchtwangen ; † May 17, 1715 in Stettin , partly also Andreas Gundelsheim and in other forms of name) was a German doctor , botanist and explorer in the service of the French King Louis XIV and personal physician to Prussian kings.

Life

Gundelsheimer was born as the son of the senior chaplain of Feuchtwangen, Michael Gundelsheimer (1640–1715). He studied medicine in Altdorf near Nuremberg . After obtaining his doctorate in 1688, he spent a few years in Venice , then went to Paris and accompanied Joseph Pitton de Tournefort and the painter Claude Aubriet on a research trip to Asia Minor and Armenia from 1700 to 1702 . After his return he moved to Berlin in 1703 , where King Friedrich I appointed him his personal physician . He held this position under the successor, King Frederick William I stopped. He died while accompanying his king to Szczecin at the age of 47.

Services

Half of the large number of plants he collected during the research trip were given to the herbarium in Berlin and half in Munich . In addition to his work as a royal Prussian court and personal physician, Andreas von Gundelsheimer also made an outstanding contribution to founding the anatomical theater in Berlin.
