Andrew Bishop (musician)

Andrew Bishop (* around 1970) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( tenor saxophone , clarinet , composition , arrangement ) and university lecturer.

Life

Andrew Bishop earned two undergraduate degrees from Wichita State University ; He completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor , where he received two master's degrees and a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition. He had lessons a. with David Baker , Jerry Bergonzi , Tom Fowler , Dave Liebman , Craig Owens , Ellen Rowe , Ed Sarath and Reggie Workman . First recordings were made in 1993 with Craig Owens and The Bodo Ensemble; in the following years he worked in Michigan a. a. with Ed Sarath, Ellen Rowe and Carl Michel. He was also a member of the Bird of Paradise Orchestra and the Toledo Jazz Orchestra. From 2000 he also worked with Gerald Cleaver , Dave Sayers and Michele Ramo .

In 2006 Bishop released the album Time & Imaginary Time (Envoi Recordings), which he recorded in a trio with Gerald Cleaver and Tim Flood , and which was positively reviewed in All About Jazz (" a free-form, freewheeling delight "). De Profundis (from the depths) was created in 2014 with the same cast . In 2007 he took up the Hank Williams Project , with original compositions and arrangements by Bishops. Around 2012 he belonged to the formation Hot Club of Detroit (with Jon Irabagon , Evan Perri , Paul Brady, Shawn Conley, Cyrille Aimée ), he also played with Kris Davis ' band Infrasound (album Save Your Breath , Clean Feed 2014). In the field of jazz he was involved in 22 recording sessions between 1993 and 2015, including a. with Gerald Cleaver ( Live at Firehouse 12 ). He was also active as a composer of contemporary orchestral and chamber music. Currently (2018) he also plays in the ensemble The Cool Philosophy of Ben Goldberg (with Kirk Knuffke , Tony Scherr , Kenny Wollesen ).

Bishop taught jazz, music theory, and composition as Assistant Professor at Albion College in Albion, Michigan, and then as Associate Professor of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation at the University of Michigan .
