Andrew Burnham (born March 19, 1948 in Worksop , Nottinghamshire , United Kingdom ) is a former Bishop of the Church of England and a priest of the Roman Catholic Church since 2011 . He was Bishop of Ebbsfleet, Canterbury Province, from 2000 to 2010 .

Life

Andrew Burnham attended Southwell Minster Grammar School and was a choirboy in the cathedral choir . He later went to Oxford , where he studied music at New College from 1966, then theology , and later became a priest. But doubts about his faith in his vocation led him to first become a music teacher and then a freelance musician and choir director .

With a performance of the Verdi Requiem with local choirs, professional soloists and the Birmingham Municipal Symphony Orchestra , he achieved a high point in his career as a conductor . In the meantime he had become chief conductor and director of various music choirs. After unsuccessfully applying for the post of Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral in 1978, he returned to his faith and calling and further training at St. Stephen's House , Oxford. There he was ordained a deacon on July 3, 1983, the feast of St. Thomas, and ordained a priest on January 1, 1984.

Andrew Burnham remained in Nottingham and became Carrington's Vicar in 1987 . At the General Synod of the Church of England from 1990 to 2000 he was elected to the Liturgical Commission for the period from 1995 to 2000. In 1995 he became vice-rector of St. Stephen's House , Oxford, teaching liturgy and mission . In 2000 he was appointed Bishop of Ebbsfleet and was consecrated on November 30, 2000, St. Andrea's Day. The Bishop of Ebbsfleet is an auxiliary bishop to the Archbishop of Canterbury for parishes that oppose the ordination of women . Ebbsfleet is where Saint Augustine of Canterbury landed and preached on the Isle of Thanet in 597 AD .

Conversion to the Catholic Church

Andrew Burnham converted from the Anglican Church to the Roman Catholic Church on January 1, 2011 with John Broadhurst and Keith Newton and their wives . On January 13, 2011 he was ordained deacon by Alan Stephen Hopes , Auxiliary Bishop in Westminster . On January 15, 2011 he was ordained a Catholic priest in Westminster Cathedral by the Primate of England and Wales and Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Gerard Nichols for the purpose of Pope Benedict XVI. Established Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham . On March 17, 2011 he was welcomed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Honorary Prelate of His Holiness .

Andrew Burnham is married to Cathy. They have two grown children and live in Abingdon near Oxford.
