Andrew Barry Casson Gaze (born July 27, 1965 in Melbourne , Victoria ) is an Australian retired basketball player . He is the son of Lindsay Gaze , who trained him for years with the Melbourne Tigers .
Gaze is the second most successful basket scorer in competition history after Oscar Schmidt at both the Olympic Games and World Championships and has set numerous records in the NBL .
Career
Andrew Gaze began his career at the age of 18 in the Australian NBL with the Melbourne Tigers, where he was also named NBL Rookie of the Year 1984 and was able to win the championship twice. In total, he was the NBL top point collector in 14 seasons and was named MVP seven times . In 22 years and 612 games, Gaze scored 18,908 points (an average of 30.9 per game).
In 1989 Gaze went to the United States to play at Seton Hall University , where his team moved into the NCAA finals, but lost there after extra time against the University of Michigan . Then he took part in an NBA try-out at the Seattle SuperSonics , but they did not offer him a contract. In the 1993/94 season he played for seven games with the Washington Bullets . His third attempt to play in the NBA ended with an NBA championship ring. In the 1999 season shortened by a player lockout , he played for the San Antonio Spurs , but received very little time and was not in the Spurs' squad for the play-offs .
In addition to his brief attempts in the USA, Gaze played a few seasons in Europe. In 1991/92 he was basketball in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A for Rex Udine . He was active for Apollon Patras from Greece in the 1994/95 season.
At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , he was the flag bearer for Australia at the opening ceremony. In total, he took part in five Olympic Games. After playing in 2000, Gaze resigned from the Australian national basketball team and continued his career in the NBL until 2005. On May 12, 2005, Gaze announced his resignation after 20 years of professional basketball.
Today Andrew Gaze is still active in the media. For example, he comments on basketball games on Australian television. He also coaches the Melbourne Tigers junior division.
