Andrew Sullivan (2006)

Andrew Sullivan (born August 10, 1963 in Surrey , Great Britain ) is a libertarian British journalist and blogger living in the United States .

Career

Sullivan studied from 1981 to 1984 at the University of Oxford and later, with interruptions, from 1984 to 1989 at Harvard University , where he did his doctorate on the British conservative philosopher Michael Oakeshott .

From 1991 to 1996 he worked for the left-liberal American magazine The New Republic , most recently as editor-in-chief. He had to vacate this post, allegedly because he pleaded in the magazine for an open attitude towards the very controversial and widely condemned as racist thesis of the genetic determinacy of intelligence and the supposedly resulting differences between different races and thus the editor and large parts of the Editorial staff how upset the readership had.

In late 2000, he started his blog, The Daily Dish . This is now one of the most famous political of its kind in the USA. He also writes articles for print media, including The New Republic , TIME Magazine and the conservative London Sunday Times . His blog has been part of The Atlantic Monthly's website since mid-2007 . Since February 2013 he has been running the blog without advertising, financed exclusively by subscribers, who receive full access to all posts in return. At the end of the year, The Daily Dish had a good 34,000 subscribers, with revenue of $ 851,000. In a blog post on January 28, 2015, Sullivan announced his retirement from the blogosphere and the end of "The Dish". In his penultimate post on February 6, 2015, he briefly reflects on his time as a full-time blogger.

In 2007, he married his longtime partner, a painter, in Provincetown , Massachusetts .

Views

Sullivan is generally known for his often heterodox views, which makes it difficult to fit into the traditional left-right scheme. He is an avowed gay man and HIV-positive (until 2008/9 his HIV status prevented the naturalization he wanted in the USA), which he often puts at the center of his political contributions, but very critical of what he says for the " left gay establishment "holds. He is culturally liberal and a staunch opponent of government intervention to promote traditional morality such as the criminalization of homosexuality and drugs such as marijuana , but also of political correctness . He is also against " affirmative action ", ie the preference given to minorities, especially through quotas, and the restriction of the freedom of expression of racists and homophobes . He is personally a determined opponent of abortion and disputes a constitutional right to abortion (see the judgment of Roe v. Wade of the Supreme Court ), but in principle advocates the legality of abortion .

As a supporter of Ronald Reagan, and in particular Margaret Thatcher , he is decidedly economically liberal : He supported George W. Bush's tax cuts (although not his overall budget policy because of the enormous budget deficit ), was also for Bush's failed pension reform and is generally a strict opponent of the welfare state and the progressive ones Income tax . He criticizes Michael Moore and clearly rejects the very left organization MoveOn.org . His pro-business attitude does not prevent him from promoting environmental protection, which he considers to be an important and conservative concern. Overall, he can tend to be classified as a supporter of libertarianism , although he clearly rejects its radical direction.

His stance on the Iraq war and the war on terror as a whole is controversial in the "right-wing camp" : he originally supported the Iraq war decisively. Then he began to sharply criticize its incompetent handling by the Bush administration (which he had supported in the 2000 elections ) and the foundation on unreliable intelligence. In the meantime he considers the war to be a mistake, also because, according to his own admission, he no longer believes in the West's ability to democratize Arab-Muslim societies through a military-backed "regime change". He therefore pleads for a rapid withdrawal of US troops. He also opposes the, in his opinion, clearly unconstitutional and international law unlawful treatment of prisoners by US troops and secret services in camps such as in Guantanamo Bay and, in general, against excessive interference by the state in civil rights in the name of protection against terrorism.

Sullivan has also made enemies of the American right on religious issues. Even of Irish origin, he is a disappointed but devout Catholic of his church because of its anti-gay attitude and the various abuse scandals . He is a sharp critic of Islamic fundamentalism and what for him is a false tolerance in the name of multiculturalism and political correctness , especially in Europe , and in 2006 criticized the media for not printing the Mohammed cartoons . In recent years, however, he has made a name for himself with his very critical attitude towards the influence of Christian, especially evangelical fundamentalists on the Republican Party . Based on Islamism , he invented the term " christianism " (English) for this group , defined as the view that religion had to dictate a concrete political agenda to politics, which then had to be legally valid for everyone, and as a claim that one party can represent God and another cannot.

In terms of party politics, Sullivan describes himself as independent , i.e. not belonging to either the democratic or the republican camp. Having supported Bill Clinton in the 1992 presidential election , he supported the election of Bob Dole in 1996 and that of George W. Bush in 2000 . In the 2004 presidential election and the 2006 general election , he then called for the election of John Kerry and the Democratic Party candidates. In the 2008 presidential election , he initially sympathized with Ron Paul . However, among the candidates with a real chance of winning, he preferred Democrat Barack Obama . For a long time, he considered the Republican candidate John McCain to be honorable, but already rejected his unconditional support for the Iraq war. After the nomination of Sarah Palin, classified by Sullivan as completely unqualified, as a Republican candidate for the vice presidency and in the face of McCain's repeated personal attacks against Obama, Sullivan finally turned away from McCain.

He sees Donald Trump's presidential candidacy negatively as a sign of American hyper-democratization and advocates better control of democracy by elites.
