Andria Rasmadze

Andria Rasmadse ( Georgian ანდრია რაზმაძე ; born July 30, jul. / 11. August  1889 greg. In the village on the left bank of the Tschchenischi Tskhenistsqali in Samtredia ; † 2. October 1929 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian mathematician and university professor .

Life

Rasmadze, son of the railway clerk Micheil Rasmadze and his wife Nino Nodia, graduated from secondary school in Kutaisi (now Rasmadze secondary school) in 1906 and then studied mathematics at Lomonosov University Moscow (MGU) with a degree in 1910. He then worked as a mathematics teacher in Mtsensk , Murom and Podolsk . In 1917 he received the title of lecturer from the MGU . At the end of 1917 after the October Revolution he returned to Georgia and participated in the organization of the University of Tbilisi . In 1918 he became a professor there. He insisted that all lectures be held in Georgian and published three textbooks in Georgian. Nikolos Muschelishvili came to the University of Tbilisi accordingly . Rasmadze founded the Georgian Mathematical Union in 1923 and was its first president.

Rasmadse became particularly famous for his work on the calculus of variations , which continued the work of Karl Weierstrass and David Hilbert . He found an efficient method for determining the extrema of integral functions . He developed a comprehensive theory of determining the extremes of discontinuous functions that can be represented by a finite number of curves. He presented this theory at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto in 1924 , whereupon he received his doctorate from the University of Paris to docteur ès Sciences Mathématiques in 1925 with his dissertation on discontinuous solutions in the calculus of variations . He gave lectures in Jacques Hadamard's seminar in Paris, as well as Paul Lévy , Laurent Schwartz , Louis de Broglie and Max Born .

The Mathematical Institute of the University of Tbilisi has had Rasmadse's name since 1944. The institute's journal, published since 1937, is now called the Proceedings of A. Razmadze Mathematical Institute .
