Andrij Abasyn

Andrij Abasyn ( Ukrainian Андрій Абазин , Polish Andrzej Abazyn / Andschej Abasyn; † August 16, 1703 in Sharhorod ) was a Cossack general who initially served the Rzeczpospolita under John III. Sobieski stood, but in 1702 he joined the uprising of Semen Palij , which his supporters called the "second Khmelnytskyi uprising ".

Life

Andrij Abasyn's origin is unknown. In the 1680s he began colonization activities in right-bank Ukraine , using royal privileges to use these areas fallow due to wars. Since 1690 he was the general of the Brazlaw regiment and took part in campaigns against Ottoman - Tatar fortresses in Budschak , Kazikermen , Ochakiv , Bender and others. In 1691 he distinguished himself in the campaign of the Polish army against the Principality of Moldova and battles against Turkish-Tatar associations in Podolia .

In 1693 Andrij Abasyn repulsed a Tartar invasion at Sawran and defeated him on July 7, 1693 at Smila and November 6 at the Kodyma , after he had allied himself with Semen Palej. The befriended generals divided up the conquered land so much that Abasyn settled in Brazlaw , Palej in Fastiw , Iskra in Korsun and Samus in Bohuslaw .

After the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699, the Cossack land was declared no longer necessary and the hetman Stanisław Jan Jabłonowski ordered the generals to dissolve their army so that the Szlachta and the clergy returned to their old possessions. Thereupon Andrij Abasyn took part in the uprising of Palej and Samus and was declared an enemy of Poland. He declared the land around Brazlaw to be the land of the Cossacks.

In August 1702 he conquered the city of Nemyriv together with departments from Samus .

In February 1703 this uprising was put down. Andrij was seriously injured and captured with 2,000 Cossacks. On the orders of Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski , he was tortured and impaled in Sharhorod .
