Andrzej Stanisław Tomaszewski (born January 26, 1934 in Warsaw , † October 25, 2010 in Berlin ) was a Polish art historian , monument conservator and architect .

Life

Andrzej Tomaszewski studied architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology and art history at the University of Warsaw . At the University of Poitiers and at the University of La Sapienza in Rome, he deepened his knowledge of monument preservation and restoration. In 1976 he became Professor of Architectural History and Monument Preservation at the Warsaw University of Technology. In 1981/83 he received a scholarship at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and from 1986/87 he was a visiting scholar at the Art History Institute of the University of Mainz .

From 1988 to 1992 Tomaszewski was Director General of ICCROM in Rome, the International Research Center for the Preservation of Monuments and the Restoration of Cultural Assets. From 1995 to 1999 Tomaszewski was the General Monument Conservator of the Polish Republic and representative of Poland in the Committee of the World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO and in the Committee of the Cultural Heritage of the Council of Europe . He was managing director of the Polish National Committee of the International Council for the Protection of Monuments ICOMOS , co-founder and co-chair of the working group of German and Polish art historians “Common Heritage” and a member of the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning .

As the general monument curator, Tomaszewski was the main initiator of the “monuments of the German-Polish cultural heritage” such as the Marienburg , the Centennial Hall in Wroclaw or the old town of Thorner , which were put on the list of world cultural heritage. He also tried to restore the peace churches in Jauer and Schweidnitz . As a member of the German-Polish Foundation for Cultural Preservation and Monument Protection , he was heavily involved in German-Polish cooperation. In 2003 he received the German Georg Dehio Culture Prize . In 2005 he gave the band Poland with Ernst Badstübner , Dietmar Popp and Dethard von Winterfeld . Silesia on behalf of the Herder Institute Marburg and the Dehio Association in the series Dehio-Handbuch der Kunstdenkmäler in Polen .
